In which countries are toll roads introduced?

It is better to travel around Europe in your own car. This way, you can plan your own route. And, of course, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery. However, before you set off, it is worth finding out which countries have toll roads. Ignoring this will lead to problems for the driver and unnecessary fines.

Currently, toll roads exist in virtually all parts of Europe.

  1. Western Europe: Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, France, and, of course, Spain.

  2. Eastern and Central Europe: Tolls are charged in the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Hungary.

  3. Northern Europe: Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

Latvia and Lithuania also have toll roads. However, if your vehicle weighs less than 3.5 tons, this does not apply to you.

This modern phenomenon has not yet reached Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Monaco, Estonia, Finland, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Cyprus, and Malta.

How do toll roads differ from free roads?

This issue concerns all motorists. After all, it is logical: why should you pay, and what is so special about these roads? Yes, there is an alternative without payment, but it is slow, poor quality, and has a large number of traffic lights. But toll roads have the following interesting advantages:

  • the pavement on such roads is of excellent quality;

  • there are no left turns or traffic lights;

  • there are special safety barriers in the middle of these roads.

These roads are marked with special signs. For example, the signs may have the English word “Toll” on them. Some signs may have devices that help record passage and deduct payment.
