Once the initial shock of a road accident wears off, a driver inevitably asks: how much will the OSAGO insurance pay out? Under the current MTPL rules, the limits are clearly defined. When it comes to liability caps, the law states that OSAGO insurance covers payouts separately for harm to life or health and separately for damage to property.
What is the compensation amount under motor third-party liability insurance?
On January 1, 2025, new insurance payout limits came into force in Ukraine. They remain in effect in the current year, 2026. Under these rules, if damage was caused to a victim's property, up to UAH 250,000 is paid out per person. However, it is impossible to receive more than UAH 1,250,000 for a single insured event. Moreover, this upper limit does not depend on the number of victims involved.
However, if the passengers themselves are injured in the accident, the limit in that case reaches UAH 500,000 per victim. Yet regardless of the number of injured persons, the maximum amount is UAH 5,000,000 per insured event. These amounts apply under Law of Ukraine No. 3720-IX. They are also confirmed by the MTIBU.
What Does OSAGO Insurance Cover?
In the case of OSAGO insurance, an insured event is a situation where a road accident causes harm to third parties. Accordingly, under compulsory motor third-party liability insurance (MTPL), compensation must cover property damage as well as harm to health or life.
When it comes to compensation for damage caused to a vehicle, there are basic rules governing how such situations are settled. As a rule, all damage caused to the vehicle is compensated directly at the service station. There is also such a thing as additional coverage — in this case, OSAGO insurance may provide for it only under the separate terms of a supplementary insurance product.
Car Insurance Payout: How to Get It and What You Need
If you've been in a road accident, you need to know how to claim compensation under your OSAGO policy. The incident must be documented correctly and reported to the insurance company. At present, what is known as the direct settlement mechanism is in place. There are cases specified by law in which the injured party is entitled to approach their own insurer.
To receive a payout, you need to prepare an application and the documents required by the settlement procedure. In addition, the MTIBU offers an online service through which you can also submit a claim for compensation. The website also features a dedicated personal account where the injured party can track the status of their case.
So, in the case of compulsory Car insurance, the amount of compensation is clearly set out by law. Moreover, there are maximum limits that do not depend on the number of victims in a single road accident.
