FAQ
Can a policy be arranged once I am already abroad?
Which documents are needed to arrange a policy?
Does an electronic policy have the same legal force as a paper one?
From what moment does the policy take effect?
The question people ask most often is where to arrange travel insurance for going abroad in Kharkiv — at an office, through a travel agency, or online. The short answer is that it makes no legal difference: an electronic policy is equal to a paper one. When you arrange it, however, matters a great deal, and a mistake there costs more than any saving. Choosing to purchase travel insurance online is convenient, but the timing is what decides whether the policy works at all.
Travel Health Insurance for Trips Abroad: What Does It Cover?
A basic programme takes on urgent help, the arrival of an ambulance, an appointment with a specialist, examinations, a course of treatment — whether in hospital or not, the medicines prescribed and getting you to the clinic. Everything else — sport, luggage, a flight that falls through, a cancelled trip — comes as separate options.
Arranging a policy takes very little paperwork. The details required are ones everybody already has:
the passport — surname and given name in Latin letters, number, date of birth;
a tax number, for the financial documents;
the travel dates and the countries on the route;
the chosen programme and any extra options.
The process itself takes a few minutes, and the finished contract arrives by email.
There are three routes to a policy, and the choice is a matter of habit rather than of legal force. At an insurer's office someone will help you pick a programme, but you have to arrive during working hours. A travel agency will arrange the policy along with the tour, usually from a single company. An online calculator shows several insurers at once and works around the clock, which matters when a trip is put together in one evening.
Is travel insurance mandatory for trips abroad?
Tourism legislation names a medical policy as a compulsory condition of travel. Schengen consulates put the requirement plainly: a sum of no less than 30,000 euros, validity in every country of the zone, and a term running from the first day of the trip to the last.
On a visa-free entry the document is not usually asked for at the border, but that does not make it optional: somebody will still have to pay for treatment.
How to Choose Insurance in Kharkiv?
The main rule is to arrange it before leaving Ukraine. With most companies the policy is valid only on that condition, and buying one retrospectively, once you are already in another country, is not possible.
Some insurers do sell policies to people who are already abroad, but with a waiting period: cover switches on, for instance, five calendar days after the contract takes effect. Anything that happens during those days is not covered — and those are precisely the days that matter to someone who has remembered halfway through the journey.
Hence a simple conclusion: buy the policy together with the tickets rather than on the last evening before departure. Check that the dates close off the whole trip including the road, and that the territory includes every country on the route, transit ones included. In the KIRINS calculator the programmes of several insurers stand side by side, and each one states the moment cover begins — a field worth reading before payment rather than after.
