FAQ
What if I have already paid for the treatment myself?
How long do I have to file the documents after coming back?
Which documents are needed for reimbursement?
Does the policy work if I cross the border for just a few hours?
In Uzhhorod the border begins just outside the city, and a trip to Slovakia or Hungary is, for many people, a matter of a few hours. Because it feels so routine, travel insurance for going abroad in Uzhhorod is often bought simply "to have it", and remembered only in a doctor's consulting room. Even a few hours across the border is a case for international travel medical insurance. And that is where the real issue surfaces: the question is not whether you hold a policy, but whether you will be able to use it.
Travel Health Insurance for Trips Abroad: What Does It Cover?
The place to start is not the list of risks but the settlement model — that is what decides whether you ever see the money. There are two.
Direct settlement. You call the assistance service on the number in your policy, the desk directs you to a specific clinic and settles with it itself. You pay nothing, or only the deductible. This is the main and safest route.
Reimbursement. You pay for treatment yourself, then submit the paperwork once you are home and receive the money back. The model works, but on one condition: the assistance service still has to be notified before you see a doctor.
The most common reason for refusal is not the diagnosis but the sequence of actions: someone visits a doctor, pays, and only remembers the policy once back home. The insurer never saw the case and never approved the treatment, so there are no formal grounds to pay. The second most frequent reason is planned treatment fitted in "while we were there anyway".
The cover itself, in a basic programme, is standard:
urgent medical help, including an ambulance;
seeing a doctor, laboratory tests and imaging;
treatment as an outpatient or in hospital;
medicines a doctor has prescribed;
getting you to a clinic — or home, if the case requires it.
Is travel insurance mandatory for trips abroad?
Holding a medical policy and accident cover is written into tourism legislation as a requirement of the journey. Everything else is decided by the country you enter.
Slovakia and Hungary are both in the Schengen area, so a visa requires a policy for at least 30,000 euros that holds good everywhere in the zone and on every day of the journey. Under visa-free travel nobody asks for the document at the border, yet it is exactly what answers the question of who will foot the bill — and that question tends to arrive without warning.
How to Choose Insurance in Uzhhorod?
The first thing to look at is whether the policy comes with round-the-clock assistance in Ukrainian or English, and whether the company works on direct settlement. Write the number down separately rather than keeping it only in a file on your phone: in a foreign hospital with a flat battery, a policy whose number you cannot reach is of little use.
The second is territory. If you leave through Chop into Hungary and come back via the Slovak route, both countries have to be in the cover. The simplest solution is the same one: "Schengen" rather than a single state.
The third is paperwork. If you paid yourself, keep everything: the stamped medical report, receipts for the consultation, tests and medicines, and a taxi receipt to the clinic where relevant. Without that set the reimbursement model does not work, and the filing window is limited: depending on the company it runs from a few weeks to a month after your return. These conditions are worth reading before the trip rather than after it — in the KIRINS calculator the settlement model and the list of required documents are visible in the terms of every offer.
