Does a Green Card replace medical insurance?
Does every passenger need a policy of their own?
What does a Green Card cover, and what does a medical policy cover?
Will the policy pay for treatment after an accident that was my fault?
Zhytomyr sits on the highway half the country takes towards the western border, so people often set off abroad from here in their own car. And it is on those journeys that the commonest mistake occurs: "but I have a Green Card". Travel insurance for going abroad in Zhytomyr and a Green Card are two different documents with two different jobs, and neither replaces the other. Nor does the international health insurance cost change because the car is already insured — the two are priced and bought separately.
Travel Health Insurance for Trips Abroad: What Does It Cover?
The difference between the two policies becomes simple once you look at whom each of them protects. A Green Card insures your liability towards others: if an accident happens through your fault, the company compensates harm to the life, health and property of those affected. Your own car and your own treatment are not covered by it.
The medical policy is the opposite — it is about you. It covers:
emergency assistance and an ambulance call-out;
a doctor's consultation, tests, diagnostics;
treatment as an outpatient and in hospital;
prescribed medicines;
delivery to hospital and, in serious cases, a return to Ukraine.
So after a crash on a foreign road the Green Card takes care of the injured party, while the driver and the passengers are looked after only by a medical policy, if they happen to hold one.
There is a third document, mentioned less often. Your own car is covered by neither the Green Card nor the medical policy: repairs after an accident abroad are paid for by comprehensive motor cover, provided it is in force outside Ukraine. Without it a damaged car remains your problem even when the accident was not your fault and the guilty party was never identified.
Is travel insurance mandatory for trips abroad?
Both documents are compulsory, each in its own way. The Green Card is checked at the border: without it the car simply will not be let through. The medical policy is compulsory under tourism legislation, and for a Schengen visa it goes to the consulate — cover from 30,000 euros, effective in all countries of the zone throughout the journey.
For a visa-free car trip nobody checks the policy at the border. Yet treatment in Poland or Germany will not be given free of charge merely because you happened to be driving.
How to Choose Insurance in Zhytomyr?
For a car journey the main thing is that the territory of both policies matches the route. The Green Card is valid in the list of countries printed on the form, and the medical policy should cover that same list. If the car is insured for the whole of Europe while the person is insured only for the destination, you are left without medical protection in every country in between.
The second point is everyone in the cabin. A medical policy is issued to a person, not to a vehicle: the driver and each passenger needs their own. Children are listed separately as well.
The third is duration. Driving through several countries rarely fits into a single day, and a wait at the border can add hours more. The policy has to run from the moment you leave Zhytomyr until you are back, with room for the unforeseen. The KIRINS calculator shows both products, so the territory and the dates of the Green Card and of the medical policy can be checked against each other before anything is paid for.
